Eudora

Support: Email: Eudora Configuration

Notes: These instructions should enable you to configure Eudora for SMTP/POP email and for SSL. The instructions should work for Eudora 5.1 through 6.0.3, but have not yet been tested on more recent versions of Eudora.

In addition to the files on this page, other Eudora-related support documents available on this site include:

Configuring Eudora

Configuring SSL for Eudora (cont.)

To setup SMTP (outgoing) mail in Eudora versions 5.1 - 6:03:

  • Click the "Personalities" tab
  • Right Click anywhere in the personalities frame. When the menu appears, click "New".
  • Select "Create a brand new email account" and click Next.
  • Create a name for this "personality." The name does not have to be your account name. For our example, we'll call this personality "Cotse." Click Next.
  • Enter the name that you would like to show in the "From" line of your outgoing email. Click Next.
  • Enter the email address to be shown (this doesn't have to be your Cotse address). Click Next.
  • Enter your Cotse login name. Just the name, no @cotse.net. Click Next.
  • For the incoming mail server, enter mail.cotse.net, select "pop" for type of server. Click Next.
  • For the outgoing mail server, enter www.cotse.net (note that this is .net, not .com). Check allow authentication. Click Next.
  • Click "Finish"

If you are using Eudora v. 5.1, a dialog will appear requesting your password. If you wish to setup SSL Email, click Cancel and proceed to the instructions below. Otherwise enter your password and you are finished with Eudora setup.

PLEASE NOTE: Not setting up SSL Email will leave your email vulnerable. Cotse has provided you with SSL POP and SSL SMTP to protect your privacy. Follow the guidelines below to set this up.

If you are using Eudora v. 6.03, once you click Finish, you are done until the first time you try to use that personality, at which time it will ask you for your password. Again, we strongly recommend you to set up SSL email, as described in the next section.

Click the "personalities" tab again.

  • Right click the newly created Cotse account.
  • Click "Last SSL Info" in the Generic Properties tab
  • Click "Certificate Information Manager"
  • Highlight the Certificate matching "--, GB, Comodo Limited, Comodo Trust Network, Terms and Conditions of use: http://www.comodo.net/repository, (c)2002 Comodo Limited, Comodo Class 3 Security Services CA"
  • Click "Add to Trusted"
  • Click "Done" and then click "OK"
  • Click the "Incoming Mail" tab
  • Click "Last SSL Info"
  • Click "Certificate Information Manager"
  • Highlight the Certificate matching "--, GB, Comodo Limited, Comodo Trust Network, Terms and Conditions of use: http://www.comodo.net/repository, (c)2002 Comodo Limited, Comodo Class 3 Security Services CA"
  • Click "Add to Trusted"

Next you need to authorize the use of the www.cotse.net certificate:

  • Highlight the Certificate matching "--, US, 01609, Massachusetts, Worcester, "210 Park Ave #308", "Packetderm, LLC", Cotse, Provided by Intercosmos Media Group, Direct NIC Premium SSL, www.cotse.net "
  • Click "Add to Trusted"
  • Click "Done" and then click "OK"

Configuring SSL for Eudora

Testing Your Setup

To setup SSL in Eudora versions 5.1 thru 6.0.3:

  • In the Personalities tab, right click on the newly created account and click "Properties"
  • In the Generic Properties tab, locate the "Secure Sockets When Sending" pull-down menu, select "Required, Alternate Port" or "If available Start TLS or "Required, Start TLS".
  • Select the "Incoming Mail" tab at the top.
  • In the "Secure Sockets When Receiving" pull-down menu, select "Required, Alternate Port "or "If available Start TLS" or "Required, Start TLS".
  • Click OK.
  • Doubleclick on the personality name in the Personalities tab to open the Compose window. Compose a new email, sending it to your new Cotse account (i.e., address it to yourusername@cotse.net)
  • Send the email

NOTE: at this point you will get an error message. This error message is normal and expected. Continue with the following directions:

  • Right click on the personality name and click "Check Mail"

NOTE: Another error will occur at this point. Again, this is normal and expected. Continue with the directions in the next column.

Right click on the personality name in the personalities tab. Click "Get Mail." If everything's configured properly, you should now be able to send and receive mail via Eudora.

If something doesn't work, please go over the steps above again, making sure everything is set correctly.

NOTE: If you have trouble with Eudora SSL, you may want to try out our "alternate" Eudora configuration instructions. Eudora behaves differently, depending upon each person's setup. The alternate page deals with one or more of these "alternate" configurations.

Once you have completed your setup, we recommend you add additional privacy and security protection by modifying your Eudora headers.
